well, speaking about smiles—renge is probably one of the best stepford smiler you’ve seen around. she’s just so cheerful and cute! the benefactor is mostly caused by the distant brother of hers. her mother died from tuberculosis when she was 10, causing her father to re-marry another woman who’s much younger than him (at the moment she’s only 33 and her dad’s around 47-48 years old). her relationship with her stepmother and her little half-sister is all well, but not with her brother, takeru.

takeru, who’s very attached to her biological mother, was upset with his decision and distances himself from the family—including renge’s little half-sister, ayame (she’s only 8, how can she immediately understands the reason why a 26 year old grown man hating on her?). at one time (not so long before the accident happened), when they were arguing about his behavior, renge was hit on her face out of anger. after that, well—you can’t say they’re close. his ego’s way too big to apologize and she’s too hesitant. it hurts her too much, and even when she’s transported way back to the past, they haven’t mended it yet.

so yep, that pretty smile and the cheerful demeanor she shows for most of the time? it’s probably an escapism.
